wuaah, long time no see my blog, so busy few months ago #:-s.. well, today I’d like to share how to install OS Win XP on IBM Lenovo R61.
First of all, please go to your BIOS, and setup the configuration of Serial ATA from AHCI to compatibility, and turn off the core duo functionality. After that, please install the XP as usual. Since your installation has finish, please don’t install the drivers first, but you should install the intel storage manager. You could download it here. After your download has finished, please run and extract it into C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM, and then double click install.cmd in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM\PREPARE.
The next step is turn off your notebook, and go to your bios setting, and set back the Serial ATA configuration to AHCI, and turn on again the core duo functionality. When your XP run again, you’ll find the welcome to the found new hardware wizard. Please select no, no at this time, and then click next. Select Search for the best driver in these locations. Then select Include this location in the search:, specify the path, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM, and click Next. The Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard appears.
After your computer was restarted, you could install the drivers and download it from here. All drivers will be run smoothly except audio drivers. You should cheat it to make it run smoothly. Please follow below steps to make it come true.

Hello there. i followed the steps in your gide, but when i go to install the audio drivers, it gives me the error “The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware.” these are downloaded from lenovo’s website, for this laptop. this is also the file listed here on your blog. can you think of a reason for this to be happening? thank you for your time.

Did you follow my step to install the audio drivers ?
1) Intel Chip Set
2) Windows XP Update Module Q888111
3) UAA High Definition Audio
4) HD Audio Soft Data Fax Modem
5) Audio Features for Windows
if you just install the audio driver, it won’t work

Hi, I have tried this method but it didn’t work. I have set up bios settings as above and it even won’t start the installation from the bootable cd. I see just black screen and that’s it.

I managed to install a mostly working version without instructions.
I have a few questions – I set the HCI to compatibility but why do you disable Core Duo ?? what does that do?
Is it a problem if you dont reset HCI back to normal from compatibility? What will it do if you leave it on compatibility mode?
I didnt install the intel storage drivers – what do they do?
Also I have had a big problem getting bluetooth to work and see many posts with the same problem but no solution
thanks!!

well. hello all, I’m just curious that some of you failed install XP in R61i with my above method..
for Gareth,
* I don’t know why if I don’t disable the Core Duo, I could install XP properly. So that I tried to disable it
* I was reset it just to get the SATA functionality back. I don’t know exactly if I just left it on compatibility mode.
* I’m sorry I also don’t know what Intel storage driver do, I just followed the IBM instruction
* bluetooth for some behavior will not work properly in XP SP 2, I also found some cases about it but luckily my bluetooth is working properly.
